Our sad old nude plywood subfloors from 1996 are in dire need of cover-up despite the fact that we've grown accustomed to their shiny patina of ground-in spills, dirt and grime. We become acutely aware of this when someone's coming to visit. Then it's like "OMG these floors are horrible! - HIDE them!!!" We've worn down the wood so that it's wavy now. The harder parts of the grain stayed raised while the "between areas" became craters. Some rooms have stabbing splinters that latch into your socks and feet - OUCH! I've been on my hands and knees gluing these down through the years. We also have 16-year old vinyl floors that curl up on the edges and trip us when we enter the kitchen and bathroom. We use a lovely maroon tape to prevent injuries. None of this has been made up. We are truly floor-challenged here. Our feet and our eyes would be SO grateful for a real floor!! We think it is time to take the next step. Really.
